Latest Your stories Gaining independence We scheduled a guest speaker to attend our drop-in service to share some information regarding Personal Budgets and how these payments can help service users design their own bespoke package of recovery support. Harry* approached staff at the event after listening to the presentation and was really keen to find more information on how to obtain a Personal Budget, as he thought he might be eligible and would find this kind of assistance very helpful. Harry still lived at home with his parents, who helped him manage his mental health, and at 40 years old he felt ready to move on – but needed some support to do so. We helped Harry to complete the first part of the assessment form, ensuring that he was able to fill it out correctly, and forwarded it on to his Social Worker. A meeting was soon scheduled between our staff and Harry’s social worker to discuss this further and share some information about Harry’s needs. After a full assessment, throughout which we worked with Harry and his social worker to support him, Harry was thrilled to be granted a Personal Budget. Harry is now living independently in a warden-controlled setting, and could not have afforded this support without the Personal Budget we helped him to access. He has full control of how his care is delivered, and feels much happier now that he has his own place. He continues to access our service occasionally, to help him find new ways to increase his independence. Harry told us how glad he was that we helped him find out about and access the support he needed. “There may be some big and scary changes happening in my life,” Harry told us, “but if you don’t try you’ll never know what you are capable of!” Find out more about our services * This case study is from a real client of MHM, but the names have been changed and the photo has been staged by an actor to protect their privacy.
