Mish Loraine, our Lead Development Worker for our User Voice services, has had a busy month organising the Gateshead World Mental Health Day event. Fresh from an exciting day, she told us all about how the event went...

I’m fresh back in the office returning from another very successful Gateshead World Mental Health Day event led by staff and Service Users at MHM's Gateshead Mental Health User Voice service.

For the second year in a row The Shipley Gallery was a prestigious venue to host this year’s celebration and the staff present on the day, from senior managers to caretakers, bent over backwards to ensure the event went smoothly.

My day began just after 8am in The Shipley ensuring all the organisations who had booked a stall were allocated a table; over thirty organisations had stall space this year ranging from Gateshead Mental Health User Voice and other local MHM services to the Gateshead Carers Trust, local Talking Therapies and local CMHTs.

The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day was ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’ and this was represented in this year’s event with stalls from Youth Focus, Making Changes, Young Carers and Time to Change.

It was also reflected in speeches from The Children and Young people’s Co-ordinator for Time to Change and one of the young people from Making Changes as well as a performance from Tahmina Arts, a young performance poet.

In addition there was a free buffet and refreshments all day long served by a wonderful group of volunteers including four student social workers based in Gateshead.

I would like to thank all the Volunteers, as well as Iain Miller of Public Health Gateshead who provided the funding for the event and also helped out tremendously on the day.

I would also like to thank those who supported on the day and attended the World Mental Health Day planning meetings, the stallholders and my colleagues and manager for their support on the day.

Thanks also to Craig Lynch and friends for providing music and entertainment and the aforementioned young speakers and performers!

Finally thanks to Gateshead Clubhouse who provided a free meeting room for our planning meetings.

Same time next year!
