Commenting on the funding tests facing the mental health sector, Chief Executive Officer of Mental Health Matters, Jane Hughes said:

"We congratulate the Prime Minister as he settles into his first week in office. The Labour Party stood on a platform promising to address the funding challenges facing the health and mental health sector but, this critical support needs to be timely.

It is vital that the recommendation by the independent Hewitt Review to grow the proportion of funding spent on prevention by 1 per cent per year by the independent Hewitt Review is implemented in future funding packages. This would help prevent the deterioration of people’s mental health and support the early intervention that the new government have said they wish to prioritise.

Alongside this, funding for crisis support needs more certainty and guaranteed cost of living increases. Without these, there will be an impact on the mental health workforce and quality of services delivered".
