Visible disabilities

A visible disability is a disability or health condition that can be immediately apparent to others.

The impact of a visible disability varies widely. For some, it may involve the use of mobility aids or adapted equipment; for others, it may affect movement, coordination, or the way they communicate. Visible disabilities encompass a broad range of conditions, which may include physical impairments, long-term health conditions, mobility or neuromuscular disorders, limb differences, and other disabilities that can be seen or recognised externally.

Because these disabilities can differ greatly, the type of support someone needs also varies from person to person.

Below is a collection of personal reflections, guidance, and examples of best practice for supporting people with visible disabilities.

This page is under development and we will continue to improve your available resources.
